Parts of Speech - A little introduction...

When we speak we utter different words for different purposes or to explain different phenomena or thoughts. Some words are used to donate an action or a name, whereas some words are used to show characteristics of something, and a lot are used to connect different words and sentences together. So, for better understanding and teaching, grammarians have divided all such words into different types called parts of speech.
There are eight parts of speech and are named as;
1. Noun | 2. Adjective | 3. Pronoun | 4. Verb | 5. Adverb | 6. Preposition | 7. Conjunction | 8. Interjection

1.Noun: A word which donates a person, place or thing is known as a noun.
=> A man is sitting on the table.
=> Isil lives in Brazil.
In above mentioned sentences nouns are italicized.

2. Adjective: Any word that qualifies a noun or noun phrase is called as adjective. In simple words, we can say that adjective tells about any characteristic of a person, place or thing. It usually comes before noun.
=> Pakistan is beautiful country.
=> He is a lazy boy.
In these sentences 'beautiful' and 'lazy' are adjectives. They are qualifying 'country' and 'boy', respectively.

3. Pronoun: A pronoun is a word that comes instead of a noun or in place of noun. It usually represents the previously mentioned noun, if there is any.
=> Ali is student. He goes to school.
=> Akram and Aslam are friends. They study together.
In the first example, in the second sentence 'he' is used instead of 'Ali' which is a noun. So, 'he' is a pronoun. Similarly, in the second example, 'they', used instead of 'Akram and Aslam', is a pronoun.

4. Verb: A word denoting an action is known  as verb.
=> He drives the car.
=> The play football.
Here, 'drives' and 'play' are representing actions of driving and playing, respectively. They are called as verbs.

5. Adverb: Adverbs modify the meaning of adverb, adjective, and every other part of speech except noun. Adverbs modify sentences as well as other adverbs also.
=> She was amazingly fast.
=> However, we are not going there.
In above examples, 'amazingly' and 'however' are adverbs. First adverb is modifying  the meaning of an adjective coming after it 'fast'. Whereas, second adverb is modifying the whole sentence coming after it.

6. Preposition: It is a word that donates relationship of a noun or a pronoun with some other thing. It usually precedes nouns and pronouns.
=> Water is in the jug.
=> He was accused of murder.
=> All students are at the college.
As we can see that in above sentences 'in', 'of', and 'at' are showing relation of either a noun or a pronoun with something else. These are prepositions.

7. Conjunction: It is used to connect or join words, phrases, clauses or sentences.
=> Two and two make four.
=> He gambles, yet he doesn't smoke.
=> He tried hard, but couldn't succeed.
Here, conjunctions are 'and', 'yet', and 'but'.

8. Interjection: Such a part of speech that expresses a strong feeling or an emotion is known as interjection. Interjections are also known as exclamations.
=> Alas! His father died last week.
=> Hurrah! We've won the match.
In the first sentence, 'Alas'  is representing great pleasure. And in the second sentence, 'Hurrah' is showing sorrow. These words are interjections or exclamations.
